Falling under the purview of the Lunuganga ecological efforts, this programme is part of an ongoing research by the University of Sri Jayewardenapura which focuses on the rehabilitation of the hog deer (Axis porcinus) species on Dedduwa Island. Considered a threatened species, the programme aims to create awareness and educate the local community in order for the two to co-exist.
A team of dedicated researchers dive into the intricate dynamics of ecosystems, employing innovative techniques in conservation, biodiversity monitoring, and sustainable management tailored specifically for Lunuganga island.
At the core of this endeavor is a comprehensive study of hog deer behavior—the identification of major behavior patterns, their associated behaviors, and an in-depth analysis of the population's activity budget.
Leveraging this understanding, the project will be used to develop a robust conservation plan. Aimed at outlining strategic measures focused on preserving and responsibly managing the hog deer population, ensuring their harmonious existence within Lunuganga's ecosystem and across their wider range of habitats.
