All Right Angles
A residential workshop for emerging local cultural practitioners

Lunuganga has a long history of providing inspiration and refuge to artists and makers; not only to Geoffrey Bawa, but to those he invited during his lifetime like Laki Senanayake, Lidia Duchini, Fiona Hall, Jimmy Ong and Michael Ondaatje. More recently, Reena Kallat, Kengo Kuma, Lee Mingwei, Chandragupta Thenuwara, Dayanita Singh and Dominic Sansoni have engaged with the garden through curatorial projects. On the occasion of Lunuganga’s 75th anniversary, we are delighted to continue this practice and to invite early-career artists, architects, designers, and visual practitioners across disciplines to participate in a 4-day immersive workshop in the garden.
“All Right Angles”, a residential workshop organised by The Geoffrey Bawa Trust, together with Colomboscope and Kälam, and with the support of EUNIC Sri Lanka, will use the garden as a lens for engagement with architecture, art and ecology. A range of local and international facilitators will take participants through sessions on visual research methodologies, non-vocal forms of expression, (de)constructing definitions, and much more, delving deeper into the programme themes which include empathy through ecology, access beyond language, and nature and the natural. Guided sessions will be interspersed with garden walks, star gazing, reflecting in the “To Lunuganga” reading room, and conversing with a cohort from across the island.
“Creative Island – From Forest School to Sensory Architectures” is a project by EUNIC Sri Lanka and Colomboscope, the Geoffrey Bawa Trust and Kälam (Jaffna). EUNIC — European Union National Institutes for Culture — is Europe’s network of national cultural institutes and organisations, with 36 members from all EU member states and associated countries. EUNIC Sri Lanka - consisting of the Alliance Française with the support of the French Embassy to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, the Goethe-Institut, the British Council, the Italian Embassy, and the Dutch Embassy — adopts an integrated approach to building cultural relations and creative collaborations and supporting diversity.
Application Criteria
• Self-trained and professional local visual artists and contemporary cultural practitioners (18 – 35 years)
• Artists without commercial representation encouraged
• We take diversity in participation as a shared commitment
• Participants whose first languages are Sinhala and Tamil are welcome to apply.
In-person interpretation during the workshop sessions will be available (Please indicate if required)
• Open to applicants who are Sri Lankan citizens
What is provided?
• Reimbursement of travel expenses
• All meals and accommodation (on double sharing basis)
